Measures will be taken to release all vehicles that had been imported in violation of rules and regulations and are currently in the custody of the department, the Sri Lanka Customs said.
Customs Director-General Major General (Retired) G. V. Ravipriya said steps will be taken this month to release the vehicles in order to implement the budget proposal in this regard.
He further said that vehicles that had been imported in violation of rules and regulations will be released subject to fines and taxes.
Major General (Retired) G. V. Ravipriya said nearly 262 such vehicles that are currently under the custody of the Customs Department will be released after the necessary fines and taxes are collected by the end of this month.
Stating that all 800 vehicles that had been imported in violation of rules and regulations will be released after obtaining the fines and taxes, he said in certain cases the Attorney General’s advice is required.
Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa had proposed in the Budget 2022 to release the vehicles under the custody of the Sri Lanka Customs in order to generate additional revenue of Rs. 4 billion. (NewsWire)
