The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has issued a clarification on Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s statement on seeking advice from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Minister Rajapaksa yesterday said Sri Lanka has informed the IMF in writing to provide experts’ advice on the current economic situation of Sri Lanka.

He further said that Sri Lanka expects IMF representatives to visit the country soon.

Clarifying the Minister’s statement, CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal said the Finance Minister’s comments were only on seeking routine technical assistance for the newly established Macro-Fiscal Unit at the Finance Ministry.

“Finance Minister’s comment yesterday (2) re.”#SriLanka informing @IMFNews to provide #expert advice on #economic situation” is about a routine Technical Assistance Program on Macro-Fiscal capacity building for MOF’s new Macro-Fiscal Unit. Nothing else,” Cabraal tweeted.

Meanwhile, responding to the Finance Minister, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dr. Harsha De Silva said “So, apparently #SriLanka FinMin Basil Rajapaksa never asked @IMFNews for any assistance with debt management.”

Stating that the so-called letter was on some routine matter, MP De Silva said the Government and CBSL win another round of ‘Homegrown Solution’.

“The so-called ‘letter’ was on some routine matter! The #NevertoIMF Gov @CBSL wins another round for ‘Homegrown Solution’. What a tragicomedy we have become,” he tweeted. (NewsWire)
