Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has addressed questions raised on social media platforms by Sri Lankan youth on the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Issuing a statement, the United National Party (UNP) said its party leader took the time to discuss issues raised by the youth of Sri Lanka regarding the conflict in Ukraine and its impact on Asia.

This session was moderated by Ishini Kavisha. The questions asked were based on the numerous enquiries about the conflict, which had been directed to MP Wickremesinghe’s via his social media channels.

Addressing the concerns of the youth, MP Wickremesinghe highlighted the fact that Asia has acknowledged that Russia has invaded Ukraine but remains non-committal in regard to the sanctions imposed against the country.

The UNP said he also called upon Asia to step forward and take the lead in global matters, predicting that within the next 10 years the region will be able to assume the mantle of a global leader.

MP Wickremesinghe has a wealth of knowledge on international affairs. He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Democratic Union and the Vice-Chairman of the International Democratic Union. He is also a former Robert E. Wilhelm fellow at the Centre of International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA. (NewsWire)
