Sri Lanka is set to sign a joint venture shareholders agreement with India for the setting up of a solar power plant in Sampur.

The agreement is to be signed this evening between the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the National Thermal Power Corporation in India (NTPC).

Preliminary discussions on the Solar Energy Park in Sampur, Trincomalee, got underway between the Sri Lankan Government and the Indian energy conglomerate NTPC Ltd. in February.

The discussion focused on a potential Private-Public Partnership (PPP) to open a 50 MW solar park in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.

The new renewable power plant would be built on land that was already leased to the company a few years prior for a coal power plant, which was rejected by the previous Government.

It has also been reported that the solar park project would not fall under the Government’s current 50 MW renewable power plant initiative.

NTPC Ltd. is India’s largest power generation utility, with an overall power generation of 60,000 MW in India.

The new solar power park being planned is to be done under the aegis of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). (NewsWire)
