Members of the opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party have commenced a protest inside the Parliament chambers.

The MPs are holding placards and are chanting “Go Home Gota”, demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Parliament was adjourned for 10 minutes today after a tense situation erupted following a heated argument between Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando and SJB MP Nalin Bandara.

The argument had ensued after Minister Johnston Fernando interrupted and responded to a speech made by MP Nalin Bandara.

Minister Johnston Fernando as the Chief Government Whip of the Parliament informed the house that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will not resign from his post under any circumstances.

His response resulted in an argument between the ruling party and the opposition, with several SJB MPs now protesting inside the Parliament chambers calling on the President to resign.

The Parliament has once again been adjourned for five minutes due to the protest staged by SJB Parliamentarians. (NewsWire)
