Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says Sri Lanka will never be allowed to head towards anarchism.

He further said that the country will be governed under the measures to be taken to create political stability.

The Prime Minister made the statement during a meeting with the Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thero who serves as a Chief Sanghanayake in the Sri Lanka Amarapura Sect, at Temple Trees last evening (26).

The Thero along with a delegation of monks recently joined the peaceful public protest underway at the Galle Face Green calling on the President and his Government to resign.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa informed Venerable Sobitha Thero of the letter handed over by the Mahanayakae Theros on establishing an interim government.

He further said that the common consensus of all political parties, the Mahanayake Theros, and all other religious leaders will be obtained if an interim government is to be established.

Stating that political stability was essential to rectify the economic crisis, the Prime Minister said he will never allow the country to head towards anarchism.

Following the meeting, Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thero told reporters that the Prime Minister said that he is willing to resign from his post if there is an agreement over a new prime minister.

The Thero said the Prime Minister had pointed out that following his resignation it will take considerable time to appoint a replacement adding that this could lead to the country heading towards anarchism.

Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thero also said that the Prime Minister had repeatedly stated that the country cannot be governed under the powers vested with the President. (NewsWire)
