Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) of Sri Lanka has raised concerns regarding the decision of health authorities on lifting the mandatory face mask wearing requirement for the general public.

Director General of Health Services ( DGHS) issued a communique on 9th June, making it not mandatory to wear face masks both indoors and outdoors, with effect from 10th June 2022.

The AMS says that it is surprised to hear the sudden announcement by the DGHS regarding the face mask rule relaxation, pointing out certain points which are not clearly specified in the press release.

“Strangely, this announcement has not specified whether it is necessary to wear masks in hospital settings both for Health care workers as well as for General Public” the statement read.

It also raised concerns removing the face mask requirements while there is a severe shortage of medicines in the country.

The AMS also advises the general Public not to change their current healthy practice of wearing masks, specially during indoor gatherings as this is not the best time to change this good practice.

The statement also urged the health authorities to maintain the practice of wearing masks in all health care institutions to avoid vulnerable population like elderly and immunocompromised getting sick with unwanted respiratory infections. (NewsWire)
