SC decision on SJB’s amendments to 21A

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today announced the determination of the Supreme Court regarding the amendments to the 21st Amendment to the Constitution that was submitted by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

The amendments to the 21st Amendment to the Constitution were presented as a Private Members’ Bill by an SJB MP.

Announcing the Supreme Court determination in Parliament today, the Speaker said several clauses were found to be inconsistent with the Constitution.

He further said the clauses can, however, be enacted through a special majority and a referendum.

The Speaker emphasized that some clauses need a referendum and need to be passed with a two-thirds majority. (NewsWire)
