Sri Lanka and Russia have held a productive discussion through a telecon session between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

In a Twitter message, President Rajapaksa said he had held a very productive telecon with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

“I thanked President Putin for all the support extended by his government to overcome the challenges of the past,” he said.

President Rajapaksa further said he had also requested an offer of credit support to import fuel to Sri Lanka in defeating the current economic challenges.

The President also revealed that he had made a humble request to restart the operations of Russia’s Aeroflot Airlines in Sri Lanka.

“We unanimously agreed that strengthening bilateral relations in sectors such as tourism, trade, and culture was paramount in reinforcing the friendship our two nations share,” he added.

Ties between Russia and Sri Lanka soured in June after an Aeroflot flight had been detained at the Katunayake airport for a few days due to a personal dispute. (NewsWire)
