Message from former President Chandrika Bandaranaike to the new President
I extend my best wishes to Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe on his election by Parliament, as the 8th President of Sri Lanka.
He takes over the reins of our country at a moment when it is besieged with unprecedented challenges.
I have no doubt President Wickremasinghe will remember that this change was made entirely possible by the extraordinary activism of the young civil activists of our country, with the full support of the vast majority of citizens.
Their strident call is for a regime that Governs in the People’s interest and not its own, where the Rule of Law, Honesty, and Good Governance will reign supreme.
A government that will give no space to corrupt public figures.
This will be a difficult task, requiring the active participation of political and civil society leaders in the process of governance, through the creation of new institutions.
At this defining moment in our history, Sri Lanka needs visionary leaders with far-sightedness and generosity of heart.
In the greater interests of my country, I wish President Wickremasinghe Good Luck and Success.
