Education Minister Susil Premajayantha says a special programme will be launched to prevent the distribution of drugs in school and schoolchildren from getting addicted to narcotics.

Attending an event at a prominent boy’s school in Colombo yesterday, he said that as a preliminary measure the checking of school bags will be re-introduced at schools.

Stating that this had been a practice in the past, he said the failure to do so may enable narcotics to enter schools in various forms including candy.

The Education Minister said he intends to reintroduce the checking of school bags from next week by issuing a circular to all Education Provincial Directors.

He pointed out that attempts are underway to distribute drugs to school children without their knowledge.

The present laws of the country pertaining to narcotics must be amended to include new varieties of narcotics found at present, the Minister added. (NewsWire)
