Nearly 50% of Sri Lanka’s population suffers from vitamin D deficiency, the Ministry of Health reported.

Health Experts say vitamin D deficiency has several medical effects on the human body, including on the skeletal system.

Vitamin D deficiency occurs when the body doesn’t get enough vitamin D from sunlight or diet causing loss of bone density, osteoporosis, and broken bones.

Exposing the skin to sunlight in the morning is considered one of the easiest ways to obtain vitamin D for the body.

Severe vitamin D deficiency can also lead to other diseases in both children and adults alike.

In children, it can cause rickets which is a rare disease that causes the bones to become soft and bend.

In adults, severe vitamin D deficiency leads to osteomalacia which causes weak bones, bone pain, and muscle weakness.

Health experts say vitamin D can be obtained through the skin, via diet, and from supplements. (NewsWire)
