Russian tourists arrive : Minister reveals next target

Russia’s Aeroflot flight that landed in Sri Lanka today arrived at full capacity consisting of tourists, Minister of Tourism Harin Fernando said.

Speaking to reporters, he said Sri Lanka expects an increase in the number of tourist arrivals from November to December due to the resumption of Aeroflot flight operations. 

He further said this flight will also attract tourists from several other countries to Sri Lanka boosting tourism. 

“Today’s flight operated at full capacity. We have also learned that over 80% of seats are sold out until January 2023,” the minister revealed.

Recommencing flight operations between Colombo and Moscow, the Airbus 330-300 SU 288 flight consisting of a total of 252 tourists, arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport at 10.06 a.m. today. 

The Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited said Aeroflot Airlines will operate with a flight frequency of 2 flights a week between the two destinations.

From November 2022 to March 2023, the airline will operate three flights per week.

The AASL further revealed that it has been reported that over 75% of seats have been reserved by now. 

That is great news for the country for the development of the tourism industry and that will contribute immensely to our economy. This route development will boost the tourism industry in Sri Lanka, especially in the post-pandemic period. 

Russia has been one of the most reliable and friendly destinations for Sri Lanka to attract tourists and for many decades Russian inbound tourism has been showing its great potential as an important source market for the development of the travel and tourism industry in Sri Lanka, it added.

The AASL said the recommencement of Aeroflot airlines to Sri Lanka will immensely contribute to the booming aviation, travel, and tourism industry in Sri Lanka. 

Aeroflot initially commenced flights to Colombo in 1964 and is one of the oldest airlines that operated flights to Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
