The National Elections Commission has announced that nominations for the Local Government Election will be called for in January.

The Commission said that the calling of nominations for the Local Government Election will commence from Wednesday, 18th January 2023.

The Commission further said that the calling of nominations will conclude at 12 noon on Saturday, 21st January 2023.

In December 2022, the Commission announced its decision to hold the much-delayed Local Government polls.

At the time, Chairman of the Commission Nimal G. Punchihewa said that the Gazette notification on the number of representatives to be elected for each division will be issued dated 08th December 2022.

On 22 December, the Election Commission issued an Extraordinary Gazette appointing District Returning Officers & Assistant Returning Officers for the Local Government elections.

Various parties have been urging President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government to hold both the local government and Parliament polls in the first quarter of 2023.

The local government elections were postponed by one year in February 2022 and they should be held by February 20, 2023.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has the discretion to dissolve the Parliament anytime after February this year as per powers vested in him. (NewsWire)
