Politician remanded over ‘moonstone’ theft in Kundasale

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member of the Kundasale Pradheshiya Sabha Saliya Perera has been remanded in connection with the recent theft of the ‘moonstone’ from the Uda Malwa (Upper Deck) Archaeological Reserve in Kundasale.

The Theldeniya Magistrate’s Court yesterday (12) remanded Saliya Perera and another individual identified as Roshan Kandanagae until 25th January 2023.

Roshan Kandanagae is reported to have hidden the stolen moonstone at his residence in the Mahawala area in Kundasale.

The Police stated that four suspects have been arrested over the robbery thus far, adding that three vehicles have also been seized in connection to the incident. 

Despite the arrests, the moonstone is yet to be recovered, the Police added.

The ‘moonstone’ was stolen from the Uda Malwa Archaeological Reserve in  Kundasale on 14 December 2022, after a group broke into the museum.

The Archaeology Department had lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the theft after which an investigation was launched. (NewsWire)
