CID probes over Rs. 20 mn worth of jewellery allegedly misplaced at state bank

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has received a complaint stating that over Rs. 20 million worth of jewellery that was placed at a state bank in Oddamavadi, Batticaloa is reported to have been misplaced.

According to Mawbima, a senior Police officer has stated that an individual who had obtained a gold loan at the bank by pawning the jewellery had been informed that the jewellery had been misplaced when he had attempted to recover the jewellery.

Following a complaint made by the bank manager to the head office, an investigation conducted into the matter had found that the jewellery that had been pawned by 12 more people had also been misplaced.

The CID complaint states that jewellery that had been pawned for gold loans between January to December 2020 had been thus misplaced.

The manager of the said state bank is reported to have filed a complaint with the CID on the missing jewellery.

In the complaint, it has been informed that the 2 keys to the safe in which the jewellery was placed, were in the custody of two employees of the bank.

The senior Police officer stated that the CID is to send a separate team to Batticaloa to conduct an investigation into the missing jewellery. (NewsWire)
