Rs. 1.8 mn fine for Russian tourist for 2014 accident

A Russian tourist has been ordered to pay a compensation of over Rs. 1.8 million for causing a motor accident resulting in severe losses to the Sri Lanka Railways, it was reported.

According to Lankadeepa, the order was issued by Galle Additional Magistrate Lakmini Vidanagamage on Thursday (Feb 15).

The Russian tourist is reported to have visited Sri Lanka in 2014 during which he had resided at a house in the Ahangama area.

On January 23, 2014, the Russian along with another individual had travelled in a car and had crossed the Goviyapana- Jayasumanarama railway crossing in Ahangama when they were hit by a train.

The Russian and his friend had sustained minor injuries in the accident, while severe damages had been caused to the train engine and vehicle. 

Soon after the incident, Sri Lanka Police filed a case under traffic offences and the Railway Department also filed a case on the damages caused to the train engine and the electrical signal box. (NewsWire)
