Weather Update: Cyclonic storm developing in Bay of Bengal

The Department of Meteorology has issued a Red alert warning of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas over the next 24 hours.

A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a Depression, centered near 15.0°N and 88.4°E as of 5:30 a.m. today, 24th May, the Department said.

The depression is expected to move northeastwards and develop into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, 25th May 2024.

It is then likely to move northwards and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, 25th May 2024.

Very strong winds (60-70 kmph), heavy rainfall, and very rough seas are expected around the sea areas of the country, as well as over the southeastern Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

Naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into these sea areas until further notice. (Newswire)
