Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa launched a blistering attack on President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), accusing them of conspiring to defeat his efforts to rebuild the country ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
Premadasa made these remarks at the 37th rally of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), held in Kolonnawa as part of the party’s 2024 election campaign.
Premadasa claimed that the country now faces a clear choice between his party, the SJB, which he described as the only “clean and transparent force” capable of rebuilding Sri Lanka, and a destructive alliance between Wickremesinghe and JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
He harshly criticized the JVP, recalling its violent past. “On one side, there is a group that set the country on fire, destroyed industries, burned schools, and committed barbaric murders,” Premadasa said, referring to the JVP’s involvement in uprisings during the 1970s and 1980s. He added that “the secretary of this group is now Ranil Wickremesinghe,” positioning the current president as a key figure in what he calls a destructive political alliance. (Newswire)
