Labour officer arrested for soliciting Rs. 250,000 bribe

An official from the Labour Department who had solicited a bribe of Rs. 250,000 from a private company located in Mount Lavinia has been arrested by the Bribery Commission, it was reported. 

According to the Lankadeepa newspaper, the suspect is an official attached to the Colombo-West District Secretariat Office of the Labour Department.

The private company had been informed it is required to increase the basic salary of employees by Rs. 5000, as well as the Employee Provident Fund (EPF), while it had also been found to have violated labour laws previously.

The suspect is reported to have solicited the bribe to overlook labour law violations of the private company. (Newswire)
