Sri Lanka Police seized more than 1,821 kilograms of heroin during drug raids carried out in 2025, Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said.

Speaking at a media briefing held today (18) on the outcomes of narcotics raids conducted last year, ASP Wootler said police had taken into custody 1,821kg and 174g of heroin as a result of operations carried out across the country.

He said police had also seized 17,189kg of cannabis, 3,865kg of “ice” (crystal methamphetamine), and close to four million narcotic pills during the same period.

ASP Wootler added that approval has been granted for drug raids to continue uninterrupted in 2026 under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police

Addressing concerns raised in society over what happens to seized narcotics, he said Sri Lanka Police have carried out drug destruction processes under strict supervision. He noted that in 2024, a total of 1,890kg and 512g of heroin, ice, ketamine and cocaine were destroyed at facilities in Wanathavilluwa and Puttalam under court orders, with oversight from the Government Analyst’s Department and the relevant authorities.

In 2025, police destroyed 494kg of heroin, while a further 171kg was destroyed on January 2, 2026, in the Wanathavilluwa area, he said.

ASP Wootler urged the public to immediately inform the police if they have any information related to narcotics, calling on citizens to contact emergency numbers 1818, 118 or 119.

He said Sri Lanka Police remain committed to safeguarding public safety and maintaining law and order. (Newswire)
