On Sunday, music composer and singer AR Rahman shared a video addressing the controversy sparked by his remarks in a BBC Asian Network interview.
During the interview, Rahman was asked about discrimination in Bollywood. He said he had “never felt” it but noted that over the past eight years, there had been a “power shift” in the industry, with non-creative executives gaining more decision-making influence, which he suggested “might have been a communal thing.”
His comments drew criticism from Bollywood artists, including singer Shaan and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who called the remarks a misrepresentation without clear evidence, while many others voiced support for Rahman.
In his video, Rahman clarified that “intentions can sometimes be misunderstood” and emphasised that he never meant to hurt anyone. He added, “I feel blessed to be Indian, which has enabled the creation of a space that always allows freedom of expression and celebrates multi-cultural voices.”
