Former First Lady Maithree Wickremesinghe, wife of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, has informed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that she is unable to appear before its Financial Crimes Investigation Division today (Feb. 20).

She had been summoned to appear before the division to record a statement in connection with an investigation involving the former president.

According to reports, no specific reason has been officially disclosed for her absence, although it is stated that she is unable to attend due to health reasons.

The CID informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Feb. 18 regarding the notice issued to Wickremesinghe.

She had been scheduled to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the CID today in relation to the ongoing investigation into former president Wickremesinghe’s 2023 United Kingdom visit.

Former president Wickremesinghe was arrested by the CID in August 2025 over the alleged misuse of approximately Rs. 16.9 million in public funds during an official visit to the United Kingdom in late 2023.

The complaint alleges that during his tenure as President, Wickremesinghe misused state funds to travel to London to attend his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe’s graduation ceremony. (Newswire)
