Russia and China have vetoed a Gulf-backed draft resolution at the UN Security Council aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz, following weeks of negotiations.
The resolution received support from 11 countries, while Pakistan and Colombia abstained. However, the measure failed after Russia and China exercised their veto power.
The draft resolution, initially proposed under Chapter VII authorising military force, was later watered down to “strongly encourage” coordinated defensive efforts to secure the vital waterway.
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, who chaired the meeting, said the proposal was a serious response to recurring hostile behaviour and warned that failure to act could have grave global consequences.
He cautioned that weaponising key waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz could be replicated elsewhere, potentially disrupting global trade and energy supplies. (Newswire)
