Sri Lanka Police have rejected claims circulating on social media that the transfer of a former Monaragala Headquarters Inspector (HQI) was politically influenced.
In a statement on social media, police said the transfer was carried out on administrative grounds and due to disciplinary issues, with the approval of the National Police Commission, and that the allegations linking the transfer to the arrest of a suspect in a recent shooting incident in Akuregoda are “false and unverified.”
Police said prior reports had been submitted against the officer over misconduct on June 23, 2023 and August 08, 2024.
Investigations had also revealed public dissatisfaction, alleged misconduct and involvement in illegal activities, including unlawful treasure excavation.
The officer had also been issued multiple warning letters by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on January 31, 2024, March 06, 2024, December 20, 2024 and July 03, 2025 over disciplinary breaches, including neglect of duties and failure to comply with orders.
Police further said that a recommendation for the transfer had been submitted to the National Police Commission on February 13, prior to the arrest of the suspect on February 24, confirming there was no connection between the two events.
Further preliminary investigations against the officer are ongoing, police said, urging the public to refrain from sharing unverified and misleading information. (Newswire)
