The Department of Meteorology says the Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge, currently affects Sri Lanka’s weather.
As a result, an increase in rainfall is expected over the island after Wednesday, May 06.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 pm today (05).
Cloudy conditions will prevail over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces and the Ampara district. Morning showers are expected in these areas.
Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Galle, Matara and Polonnaruwa districts.
Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Northern and North-central provinces and in Hambantota district.
The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Furthermore, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.
Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 5055 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be moderate.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
