The National Youth Services Council has begun selecting one young man or woman from each Divisional Secretariat Division to establish a nationwide network of young regional journalists.
A discussion held at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports yesterday (11) focused on the training to be provided, the syllabus to be covered, and the opportunities available to the selected youth after completion of the program.
The Ministry said in a statement that the training will not be confined to a single medium but will encompass newspaper journalism, television, radio, and digital media, ensuring broad exposure across all fields.
Nearly 2,500 applications were received, from which candidates will be chosen through interviews.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Mass Media, will implement the program.
The initiative aims to create a platform for aspiring young journalists and to produce professional regional media practitioners to strengthen responsible journalism.
Deputy Minister of Mass Media Kaushalya Ariyaratne, Additional Secretary of the Youth Affairs Division Sumith Shantha, Director General of Government Information Harsha Bandara, and National Youth Services Council Chairman/Director General Supun Wijeratne, along with officials from both ministries, participated in the discussion.
