Sri Lankan authorities have moved to tighten regulations on drone operations and imports, with mandatory licensing and registration requirements set to be enforced amid growing concerns over security and unauthorized use.

Authorities have also warned of a crackdown on illegal drone imports and related activities.

Officials said commercially used drones and drones exceeding specified weight categories are required to be registered under existing regulations, while a formal licensing framework for drone pilots involved in commercial and professional activities is also being introduced. The licensing process is expected to include theory examinations, medical assessments, security clearance, and operational competency evaluations.

The move comes as law enforcement agencies intensify monitoring of businesses involved in the import, sale, and repair of drones and spare parts, citing national security concerns and the need to ensure compliance with existing laws.

Authorities have stressed that drone imports and operations must comply with regulations under the Civil Aviation framework, warning that action will be taken against illegal imports and unauthorized activities. (NewsWire)
