The Supreme Court has upheld the life sentence imposed on a man convicted over the 2008 suicide bomb attack that killed retired Major General Janaka Perera, his wife, and several others in Anuradhapura.

The ruling came after the court dismissed a special appeal filed by the convicted accused, Umar Hatap, seeking to overturn his conviction and life sentence.

The judgment was delivered by a two-judge bench comprising Justices Shiran Gooneratne and Menaka Wijesundara.

The attack took place on October 6, 2008, during the opening of a United National Party (UNP) political office in Anuradhapura, where retired Major General Perera, his wife and several others were killed in a suicide bombing.

The Attorney General had indicted several suspects over the attack, with the Anuradhapura High Court sentencing Hatap to life imprisonment after finding him guilty. The Court of Appeal later upheld the conviction and sentence before the accused sought relief from the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, affirming the earlier rulings of the High Court and Court of Appeal. (Newswire)
