The Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) of the Homagama Base Hospital has been digitised with the introduction of digital patient admission and registration systems, along with a telemedicine facility enabling remote consultation and patient management via video conferencing.

The new system was launched yesterday (1) under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. The first patient registration under the digital ETU system was carried out in his presence, while a patient at the Padukka Hospital was also monitored and managed remotely during a live telemedicine demonstration.

The initiative is expected to improve hospital efficiency by reducing operational costs, increasing staff productivity, optimising capacity use, enabling data-driven decision-making, and facilitating easier exchange of patient records and test data.

Following the launch, the Minister held a discussion with hospital development committee members and medical staff, including specialists, doctors, and nurses, on future plans and operational challenges at the hospital auditorium.

Medical staff highlighted the need for a four-storey multi-purpose building as a key infrastructure requirement. The Minister said attention would be given to human and physical resource management as part of the hospital’s development programme, noting that a structured plan is already in place for the upgrading of the facility in line with service demands and its strategic location.
