Police have recovered two more locally manufactured firearms in Modara, similar to the 18 locally made weapons recently seized in Dematagoda.
The firearms were recovered based on information obtained during the interrogation of a suspect known as “Modara Chathura,” the brother of organized crime figure “Modara Nipuna,” who is believed to be hiding overseas.
Modara Chathura was deported to Sri Lanka from Dubai recently and is currently being detained for 90 days under a detention order for questioning.
According to Police, the latest search led officers to recover two locally manufactured T-katas type firearms in Modara.
Investigators suspect that all of the locally made firearms recovered so far were manufactured by the same individual, and a wide-ranging investigation has been launched to identify and arrest the alleged weapons maker.
A senior Police officer also said authorities have received intelligence suggesting organized criminals have turned to manufacturing firearms locally due to a shortage of illegal weapons following a series of police crackdowns and firearm seizures across the country.
