Heat advisory issued for six districts

The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber Warm Weather Advisory for Mullaittivu, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee, and Monaragala districts, valid for today (12).

According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, the heat index—the temperature felt by the human body—is expected to reach the ‘Caution’ level in parts of these districts during the daytime.

The department noted that the heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature and reflects how hot it feels on the human body. It is not the forecast maximum temperature.

The public has been advised to take precautions to reduce the impact of the heat.

Workers at job sites are urged to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade, while those indoors are encouraged to check on the elderly and those who are ill.

Motorists have been reminded never to leave children unattended in vehicles.

People engaging in outdoor activities are advised to limit strenuous work, seek shade, and drink plenty of water. The public is also encouraged to wear lightweight, white, or light-coloured clothing. (Newswire)
