
The committee appointed to investigate the deadly clash at Negombo Prison has submitted its report to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara informed Parliament today (06).
The report relates to the violent incident at the prison on July 5, which left 22 inmates and 10 prison officers dead, while 21 prison officers and 106 inmates were injured.
Providing an update on measures taken following the incident, Nanayakkara said compensation has already been paid to the families of the prison officers who lost their lives.
He further said the President has appointed a separate committee to examine additional relief and welfare measures for the affected officers and their families beyond existing public administration provisions.
According to the Minister, the committee will make recommendations on compensation, pension entitlements and outstanding loans obtained by the deceased officers.
The committee will also assess the condition of injured prison officers, including those who may have suffered permanent disabilities, and recommend appropriate support measures, he added. (Newswire)
