Sri Lanka declares 3-Day National Mourning for Nanda Malini

Sri Lanka has declared a three-day period of national mourning following the death of legendary singer Visharad Dr. Nanda Malini.

The national mourning period will be observed on August 21, 22 and 23 in recognition of her immense contribution to Sri Lankan music and culture.

Nanda Malini passed away at her residence in Nawala on Thursday (20) at the age of 82.

Her remains will lie in state at the Nanda Malini Music Ashram in Nugegoda from 10 a.m. on Friday (21) until 3.30 p.m. on Saturday (22), allowing members of the public to pay their final respects.

Her final rites are scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Born on August 23, 1943, Nanda Malini was one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated and influential vocalists, with a career spanning several decades. She received numerous honours during her career, including 11 Sarasaviya Awards and eight Presidential Awards for Best Singer. (Newswire)
