Assault on Ranil’s security officer: Suspect cameraman released on police bail

A cameraman attached to a private media organisation, who was arrested over an alleged assault on a security officer of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has reportedly been released on police bail.

According to Police, the cameraman was arrested today ( 01) after arriving at the Kompannavidiya Police Station to provide a statement regarding the incident, following a summons issued yesterday (30). The cameraman had arrived at the police station accompanied by a lawyer.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (30) outside the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, where the security officer was allegedly assaulted while on duty accompanying the former President. Footage captured by journalists at the scene reportedly showed the cameraman striking the officer, who is attached to the Police VIP Security Division, with his camera. The footage was subsequently circulated on social media.

Meanwhile, the security officer who sustained injuries in the incident is receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Narahenpita. (Newswire)
