Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed Captain Smit Machchhar as a “hero” after he was wounded by his co-pilot aboard a Dubai-Tel Aviv flight, triggering a struggle for control of the aircraft.
“Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO,” Modi said in a statement posted on social media on Oct. 1. “In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others.”
“His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy,” Modi added. “India is proud of Captain Machchhar. Praying for his speedy recovery, renewed strength and good health.”
The incident occurred aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 on Sept. 30. The aircraft, carrying 174 people from Dubai to Tel Aviv, made an emergency landing in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar as “a true hero,” crediting him with helping prevent a disaster after his co-pilot allegedly stabbed him in what Israeli officials described as an attempt to bring down the plane.
Flydubai suspended flights to and from Israel while the incident is investigated.
Passengers and crew intervened to overpower the alleged attacker as the aircraft descended sharply. Reuters reported that the plane dropped nearly 14,000 feet in 30 seconds before control was restored.
Two additional Flydubai pilots travelling aboard the aircraft helped land it safely. Both pilots involved in the cockpit incident were taken to hospital.
The airline acknowledged an altercation in the cockpit and urged against speculation while investigators establish what happened.
Machchhar underwent surgery and was reported to be in stable condition, according to i24NEWS. The airline and Indian authorities were in contact with his family.
Israel scrambled fighter jets during the emergency amid concerns about a possible hijacking. Netanyahu later said the suspected attacker was an Omani national who had been arrested and was being questioned in Saudi Arabia.
Passengers subsequently reached Israel aboard a replacement aircraft. Israeli emergency services said three passengers were treated for minor injuries.
Israel’s government announced that it would check the identities of all pilots flying into the country.
The co-pilot’s motive and the full sequence of events remain under investigation. (Newswire)
