The magistrate’s inquiry into the death of former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara on Tuesday (12), with investigators presenting the latest developments in the ongoing probe.

Officers attached to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) informed court of the progress made so far and submitted two additional documents related to the post-mortem examination along with a further report.

During proceedings, CCD officers sought court approval to send two blood samples obtained from Chandrasena’s body to the Government Analyst’s Department for further examination and reports.

The CCD also informed court that investigators had been unable to gain access to the deceased’s mobile phone as it was secured using facial recognition technology. Police requested court approval to send the device to the manufacturer or another authorised institution to assist with unlocking it for investigative purposes.

Attention was also drawn to a necktie recovered from the scene. Police told court the item had already been produced as a case material and would be referred to the Government Analyst for examination.

Magistrate Amarasekara questioned investigators regarding several medicines and unidentified substances reportedly found at the location of the incident, and whether they had been submitted for analysis.

Responding to the court, CCD officers said the medicines had initially been handed over to the medical panel that carried out the post-mortem examination. Investigators later sought permission to submit the substances to the Government Analyst through a separate motion.

Court granted approval for the requests made by the police.

Meanwhile, statements were also recorded from former Sri Lankan cricketer Aravinda de Silva and his wife as part of the ongoing investigation.

The inquiry was postponed until Wednesday (14) for further proceedings. (Newswire)
