Excessive heat can have a serious impact on mental health, experts have warned. Psychiatrist Vindya Wijebandara said that while people living in equatorial countries are accustomed to heat, periods of extreme high temperatures can trigger stress, anxiety, depression, and restlessness.

She noted that heat affects the body’s physical and chemical balance, which in turn influences mood, sleep, and cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and decision-making.

Certain groups are at higher risk, including the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those on long-term medication. Elderly individuals with dementia are particularly vulnerable, as heat-related stress can worsen memory problems. Alcohol consumption during heatwaves can also deteriorate mental health.

Signs that heat is affecting mental health include irritability, impulsiveness, restlessness, and a general decline in psychological well-being. Wijebandara advised replacing social media use with activities that relax the mind, such as meditation, listening to music, indoor exercises, yoga, or even planting. Using fans or air conditioning and maintaining a structured routine can help manage stress.

She emphasised that with medication, relaxation techniques, and mindful practices, individuals can protect their mental health and cope effectively during extreme heat. (NewsWire)
