The government has decided to increase the compensation paid to the families of Sri Lankan migrant workers who die while employed overseas from Rs. 600,000 to Rs. 2 million.
Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe said the compensation applies to any Sri Lankan worker who travels abroad through SLBFE registration.
Wickramasinghe also noted that as of the end of August, Sri Lankan migrant workers had remitted $5.2 billion to the country.
Approximately 220,000 Sri Lankans have taken up foreign employment so far this year, with remittances expected to reach $7 billion by the end of 2025. He expressed confidence that the figure could increase to $7.5 billion in 2026. (Newswire)
