The Department of Meteorology says a low-pressure area continues to persist over the southwest Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of Sri Lanka, influencing weather conditions across the island.
Showers are expected at times in the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces.
Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 mm is likely in some areas of the Eastern Province and in the Matale, Badulla, Mullaitivu and Polonnaruwa districts.
Several spells of showers may occur in the Hambantota District.
Showers or thundershowers are also likely in several other areas after 1 p.m., with fairly heavy falls exceeding 50 mm possible in parts of the Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in sea areas off the coast from Galle to Trincomalee via Hambantota and Batticaloa. Showers may also occur in other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly at speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and from Matara to Hambantota.
The sea will be fairly rough at times in the waters off Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and from Matara to Hambantota. Other sea areas around the island will be moderate.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, the department said.
The public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
