Seven fishermen were arrested with more than 870 kilograms of illegal shark fish during a special operation conducted at the Wellamankara fishery harbour in Wennapuwa on 23 January, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard said.
According to the Coast Guard, a total of 876.2 kilograms of shark fish (Alopias vulpinus) was seized during the operation.
The suspects, along with the seized shark fish and the fishing vessel, were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector’s Office in Wennapuwa for further investigations and legal proceedings.
Shark fishing is restricted under Sri Lanka’s fisheries regulations, with several species protected due to declining populations and conservation concerns. (Newswire)
