Construction of the long-stalled Getambe flyover in Kandy was officially resumed on Today (06) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The project, which began in 2021 with funding from a Hungarian government loan at an estimated cost of Rs. 14.37 billion, was halted following the economic crisis after the loan assistance was suspended.

Construction has now resumed using Rs. 12.27 billion in local funds, with plans to complete the flyover within 22 months.

The flyover, spanning 374 metres, will be built along William Gopallawa Mawatha, starting from the southern bank of the Mahaweli River on the Gannoruwa Road side and extending over the Getambe junction and the railway line. It will feature dual lanes, expanding to three lanes near the main road.

An auxiliary flyover from the Peradeniya side, measuring 172 metres in length and 6.5 metres in width, will connect to the main flyover above the railway line, enabling uninterrupted traffic flow from Kandy to Peradeniya without crossing the railway.

The dual-lane section of the main flyover will be 9.4 metres wide, while the three-lane section will measure 12.9 metres in width. (NewsWire)
