A 3.1-kilogram bladder stone has been surgically removed from a 55-year-old patient at a hospital in Trincomalee, with doctors saying it could be among the largest bladder stones removed through surgery in the world.
The patient, who is paralysed, was admitted to the hospital about a month ago after initial examinations indicated the presence of a mass in his abdominal area.
Further investigations revealed that the mass was actually a large bladder stone, according to a doctor who was part of the surgical team.
The patient was subsequently prepared for surgery by a team of specialists, and the operation was performed on Aug. 14.
The stone removed during the surgery weighs 3.1 kilograms and measures between 14 and 19 centimetres in length, the doctor said.
The hospital director said the stone could potentially qualify for a Guinness World Record as the largest bladder stone removed through surgery, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
She credited the specialist doctor and the medical team for successfully performing the procedure, while noting that the hospital administration’s role was to provide the necessary facilities, equipment and support. (Newswire)
