The death of a Finance Ministry Assistant Director, initially reported under suspicious circumstances, has been ruled a suicide following a post-mortem examination.

A panel of four judicial medical experts confirmed that the death was caused by self-inflicted injuries.

The deceased, identified as Ranga Rajapaksha, an Assistant Director attached to the External Resources Department of the Treasury, had been under suspension over investigations linked to the alleged misappropriation of USD 2.5 million in state funds.

He was found dead at his residence on April 30, with multiple cut injuries observed on his body, prompting an initial police probe to determine whether the death was a suicide or homicide.

Authorities had launched investigations, while a special panel of four forensic experts was appointed to conduct the post-mortem examination.

The examination was carried out at the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital on May 1.

Based on their findings, the expert panel concluded that the injuries were self-inflicted, confirming the death as a suicide.

Meanwhile, investigations into the broader financial fraud case are continuing. (Newswire)
