India has dispatched a consignment of 10 Bailey Bridges to Sri Lanka to support reconstruction efforts following Cyclone Ditwah, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday.
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the bridges were sent from Visakhapatnam to Colombo aboard the Indian Navy ship INS Gharial. The deployment is aimed at restoring critical connectivity in cyclone-affected areas, where infrastructure damage has disrupted transport and access.
The supply of Bailey Bridges forms part of India’s Special Economic Package of USD 450 million for Sri Lanka, announced during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to the island nation. The assistance builds on India’s earlier emergency humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) support extended in the aftermath of the cyclone.
Reiterating India’s commitment to its neighbour, Jaiswal said New Delhi continues to stand with Colombo in its recovery and reconstruction efforts. The latest shipment underscores India’s ongoing role in supporting Sri Lanka during natural disasters and infrastructure rebuilding initiatives. (NewsWire)
