Several major rivers across Sri Lanka have reached flood and alert levels following heavy rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours, according to the Irrigation Department’s latest situation report issued at 9.30 pm on November 28.

The Kelani Ganga has entered flood conditions at multiple monitoring stations. The Glencourse station has recorded major flood levels with the water level rising to 21.83 metres, while Hanwella and Kithulgala remain at minor flood levels. Gurugoda Oya at Holombuwa has also reached major flood status, with water levels continuing to rise.

The Kalu Ganga basin shows critical conditions, with Ratnapura station recording major flood levels, though water levels there are currently falling. Putupaula and Magura stations remain under alert status, while Kalawellawa (Millakanda) has reached minor flood levels.

In the Nilwala Ganga basin, stations at Thalgahagoda and Panadugama remain under alert levels, though no major flooding has been reported so far. The Walawa Ganga at Moraketiya is also under alert, with water levels showing a falling trend.

Significant concern has been raised over the Maha Oya basin, where Badalgama and Girulla stations have recorded major flood levels with rapidly rising water. Attanagalu Oya at Dunamale has also reached major flood level, posing increased risk to surrounding low-lying areas.

Rainfall figures show heavy precipitation across several regions, with Badalgama recording 215 mm, Dunamale 211 mm and Girulla 207.7 mm within the last 12 hours.

The Irrigation Department warns that further rainfall could worsen the situation and urges residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local disaster management authorities. (Newswire)
