Above 100 mm of rain likely in some parts of Sri Lanka today

An increase in rainfall is expected across Sri Lanka from today (06) and over the next few days, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The increase in rainfall is due to the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the likely development of a low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of the island.

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 pm today.

Showers are likely in the Southern and Eastern provinces in the morning. Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely in some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-central provinces.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas around the island.

Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
