Rain expected in several districts today

Showers are expected in several districts today, with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

A few showers may occur in the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces and in the Polonnaruwa, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in the Galle, Matara and Kaluthara districts after 2.00 pm, while fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places.

Fairly strong winds of about 40 kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern province and in Hambantota and Monaragala districts.

Meanwhile, showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kaluthara to Hambantota via Galle in the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Mullaittivu via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Mullaittivu via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate. (Newswire)
