Fuel crisis: Some MPs request hotel accommodation to attend Parliament

A group of MPs has requested to be provided hotel accommodations in order to attend Parliament sittings, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed Parliament today.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told Parliament that the request had been made due to the existing fuel crisis.

The Speaker pointed out that some MPs arriving from out of Colombo had wanted to return home and were unable to do so due to a lack of fuel.

“Therefore, they have instead requested me to book a hotel for them to stay in Colombo to attend Parliament proceedings,” he added.

A few Parliamentarians have already taken to social media to voice their difficulties in attending Parliament sittings due to the fuel shortage.

The Speaker’s clarification came as reports on MPs being provided fuel at a subsidized rate were raised in Parliament today.

However, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe clarified that fuel has not been given at subsidized rates to any parliamentarian. (NewsWire)
