A police constable was remanded until October 13 after allegedly assaulting an Attorney-at-Law within the premises of the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court this morning (10).

The incident reportedly occurred after the lawyer concluded a court appearance and attempted to drive his vehicle out of the court premises. A prison bus had arrived at the same time, and the police officer had instructed the lawyer to wait until the bus entered before moving his car out.

A verbal exchange ensued between the two, which later escalated into a physical altercation, according to reports.

The police constable was subsequently arrested and produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court. Magistrate Pasan Amarasekara ordered that the officer be remanded until October 13.

In response, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) issued a statement condemning the assault, calling the incident “inexplicable” and reaffirming its stance against the use of force by police officers against any person.

“The officer concerned has now been remanded, and the BASL will closely monitor this matter. We have called upon the Inspector General of Police to take all necessary steps not only to address this incident but also to ensure that such occurrences do not take place in the future,” the statement said.
